Rhondda-based charity, Valleys Kids, has distributed hundreds of food hampers and wellbeing packages in a recent drive to help older-people during the winter months.

Funding from Interlink, as part of the #RCTKindness campaign, Admiral and Western Power Distribution has helped Valleys Kids tackle loneliness and isolation affecting those most vulnerable in our communities during the winter months.

The charity’s support has been greatly valued by older people in Rhondda communities. One recipient in her 80s said,

“The parcels helped me get through the winter. I don’t know what I’d do without Valleys Kids”.

Another, from Rhydyfelin, said,

“The way we have been looked after down here during Covid is fantastic, I only have to pick up the phone and help is there.”

Valleys Kids staff delivered winter kindness parcels

Pauline Richards, Valleys Kids’ Development Manager for Older People, commented;

“The parcels we delivered ensured our most vulnerable older people not only had something warm and comfortable to help them through the winter months but they also saw a friendly face to talk to.  The high cost of heating causes great discomfort for vulnerable older people, particularly during cold winter weather.”

The support enabled Valleys Kids to provide blankets, slipper socks, gloves, activity packs and food items where needed across the Rhondda Valleys, including 204 packs of faggots and peas sourced locally through Penygraig Family Butchers.

“Working collaboratively has been crucial in delivering this project and we would like to thank our agency partners and funders,” said Pauline. “Most importantly, we’d like to thank our volunteers, who give their time to supporting those most vulnerable older people who are isolated and lonely.”

Cristina Nestares, CEO of UK Insurance at Admiral said:

“Supporting our communities has always been important to us, and even more so during the pandemic. The work of Valleys Kids has been vital for the wellbeing of so many and it has been a pleasure to support them. They act as a force for good across the entire community and we know they will continue to bring joy and help to many through their various programs and initiatives.”

Simon James. Chief Executive, Interlink RCT, said:

“Interlink RCT were pleased to receive Welsh Government Winter Pressures funding to work with community and voluntary organisations in RCT to keep people safe and well over winter. It was a pleasure working in partnership with Valleys Kids, their strong links to the community meant they could quickly get things happening to support children, their families and older people.”

Ruth Adams, Corporate Communications Officer at Western Power Distribution commented:

“Tackling fuel poverty is a crucial and immediate priority for WPD, as vulnerable customers in the region are expected to experience hardship this year. This winter’s community funding from WPD is an extension of our wide-ranging fuel poverty programme, supporting customers who are struggling to pay their bills.”
