“Strength is a thunderstorm, old and eerie.
And love is a fire that strikes when it’s doused.”
That’s the fairytale that Granny used to tell sisters Vicky and Sarah, but that’s a long time ago when they were just kids. They are growing up now and things are changing.
Mobile phone signals are down and the television signal keeps distorting.
There’s a young girl lost on the mountain but why does no one want to talk about it?
There’s something strange happening in the village but only Vicky seems to see it.
How deep would you go to bring back someone you loved?
The performance is on Friday 16th August 2013 7pm at Penygraig Soar Centre CF40 1JZ. Tickets are £1 and 50p concessions. Phone 01443 420870 to book tickets.

Slick and spellbinding, few theatrical experiences come close to this superbly crafted show, which brings the ancient art of storytelling firmly into the 21st century.
Unlocking forgotten folk tales that inspired some of English literature’s greatest works – Shakespeare’s King Lear and Chaucer’s Franklin’s Tale and Wife of Bath’s Tale -The Devil’s Violin takes them on a new voyage of discovery.
Aided by the dramatic, driving rhythms of a skilled and inventive strings and accordion trio, Daniel Morden – one of the UK’s most compelling and applauded storytellers – lures the audience onto a rollercoaster ride in this haunting, hypnotic fusion of music and word.
Love is put to the test in three tales as the audience is transported to King Arthur’s Camelot, the Breton shores and the ancient Britain of King Lear.
Meet a knight on a year-long quest to discover what women really want and enter a world where Cinderella meets Cordelia and “Miss Mossy Coat” emerges from “The Land of Ladles” to thrill a prince.
An alchemic experience that will have you on the edge of your seat, A Love Like Salt is a rich tapestry, peppered with magic and morals, lovers and villains, desire and disguise and even a man hellbent on selling his soul to win a woman. Three wonderfully engrossing tales drawn from the past and skillfully spun into gripping stories for the present.
Timeless and thought-provoking this is a show guaranteed to fire the imagination. Come and see how the story ends.

Countryboy’s Struggle – Contact Theatre
ArtWorks are pleased to host a fantastic evening of theatre that will blow you away! ‘Country Boy’s Struggle’ is a unique debut solo show, written and performed by Maxwell Golden. The show follows an MC’s journey from the cliffs of Cornwall to the streets of London. Playing over 30 characters and mixing Hip Hop, movement and comedy.
“Hip hop is more than your shoes, clothes or hat –
It’s a community,
And that community I lacked.
It’s Country Boy’s hip hop struggle.”
The one-man show perfectly captures how it feels to grow up with a sense of isolation – a ‘fish out of water’ story – which is full of humanity, pathos and warm wit.

Massive Theatre Company & ArtWorks
Massive Theatre Company Project
During January 2013 Valleys Kids 16+ group had a fantastic experience working intensively with New Zealand Based Theatre company ‘Massive’ (Sam Scott, Kura Forrester and Jake Arona) who came to Wales to work on a two-week project also in collaboration with NTW and young people from Mess Up The Mess.
Unfortunately we couldn’t work for the full two-weeks with everyone as the snowy weather didn’t permit us to do this! However we made the most of our time together, learning about each other’s cultures and ways of living.
It was a lovely project that saw young people from Wales coming together developing new friendships and building relationships with other organizations. The group learnt about the Māori culture and the traditions of how they work when starting on a new project. The group sampled a tasting of traditional New Zealand cake and welsh Cakes. During the workshops the group learnt new techniques (The Massive way) and developed their ways of working professionally.
On Sunday 27th January Valleys Kids and Mess up the Mess young people performed a small sharing of their work to an audience at Cwmaman Institute, Aberdare. The young people thoroughly enjoyed the experience and are keen to develop this methodology further in their future projects.
We hope to work with all organizations some time in the near future, whether in Wales or New Zealand!
Ken Loach Film Premiered in Soar
Zoom Cymru with support from Valleys Kids have worked with The Film Agency for Wales and the Wales One World Film Festival to help bring lauded director Ken Loach (Kes, The Wind That Shakes the Barley) to the valleys. Loach’s new film The Spirit of ’45 will receive its Welsh premiere at Valleys Kids, Soar Centre, Penygraig Roundabout, CF40 1JZ and Cardiff’s Chapter Arts Centre on 6th March at 6pm.
It will be followed by a Q&A with the director, streamed live to the Soar Centre, where audience members will have the opportunity to interact with the director and learn about the Welsh stories that made their community what it is today. The Spirit of ’45 is an impassioned documentary about how the spirit of unity that buoyed Britain during the war years carried through to create a vision of a fairer, united society.
During the post-screening Q&A, Loach will be joined by Ray Davies and Dr Julian Tudor-Hart, two Welsh octogenarians who appear in the film with vivid stories of Wales’ rich social and cultural heritage. This special screening of The Spirit of ’45 leads Zoom into the launch of the 2013 Young People’s Film Festival of Wales that takes from 11th – 15th March across South Wales.

Adapted by Carol Ann Duffy and dramatised by Tim Supple
In the dead of night, the moon is hiding behind a cloud, and deep in the
dark, dark forest two children are lost, scared and hungry….
How are we ever going to find our way out of this enormous forest?
A young girl, exhausted with work and deprived of a bed, lies down in the
dirty ashes. Her stepsisters with hearts as ugly as thorns snigger at her.
Shake your leaves and branches, little tree,
Shower gold and silver down on me.
The deliciously scary and thrillingly dramatic stories of the Brothers Grimm
are brought to life in a imaginative new production by internationally
acclaimed Theatr Iolo.
Includes Hansel and Gretel and the original version of Cinderella, there are
sure to be classic stories you know, and several that you may not!
Soar Centre – Penygraig – Ages 6 +
19th November 2012 – 7pm

Inspired by one of the greatest works of fictions ever published, Hijinx Theatre presents the classic capers of Don Quixote through the eyes of his wise and often hard done-by sidekick Sancho Panza.
So, you’re a squire? How does a squire, squire?
Well…first I ride behind him. Then he fights. And then I pick him up off the ground.
Take one idealistic, insane knight and one devoted, down to earth squire, throw them into a plethora of unforgettable incidents, tragic and comic, and watch as an incredible journey unfolds!
The Snow Tiger
Usko loves to be told stories… especially the one about the Snow Tiger. He loves going off exploring too when nobody’s looking. One day he sneaks off to find out what happened to the Snow Tiger but gets lost!
Help Usko as he journeys into the snowy forest to help to save the Snow Tiger from the hands of Baba Yaga. With song, dance and live music, The Snow Tiger will surely be a festive treat.
