Junk to Funk Fashion Show
A Trashion Success!
Saturday 10th April 2010 saw the showing of the Penygraig Trashion Show at the Soar Centre, Penygraig.
This was a fashion show where all outfits were made from materials that would have been thrown away. Some materials were recognisable, while other items would have been thrown away by factories and shops. Models and designers ages ranged from 8 years to 80 years old and a great time was had by all.
The Project involved Penygraig & Williamstown Communities First, Valleys Kids Art Works, Penygraig Community Project, the Older Persons Coffee morning group, Penygraig Community Project volunteers and 5 local schools.
Workshops with schools and groups were held leading up to the show where they learnt about the effects of a throw away society on our planet and designed and made the outfits.
Each school had an element and learned of the effects of global warming on the environment and made their costumes to match the element. They were:
Tai Centre - Fire
Penygraig Juniors - Water
Williamstown Primary - Earth
Ysgol yr Eos - Air
While Tonypandy Community College, Older Persons Group and the Volunteer Group came up with their designs from a variety of materials.
So the serious side of the project was the environmental issues and the fun side was designing and making the costumes and modelling them on the night.
The night of the show was a sell out and the Soar Centre was full to capacity. Everyone, from audience to participants enjoyed the show and there was a standing ovation at the end.
A big thank you to all those who took part and support the Trashion Show.
