Saturday 10 April 2010
A Trashion Success!
Saturday 10th April 2010 saw the showing of the Penygraig Trashion Show at the Soar Centre, Penygraig.
Read more about Junk to Funk Fashion Show
This was a fashion show where all outfits were made from materials that would have been thrown away. Some materials were recognisable, while other items would have been thrown away by factories and shops. Models and designers ages ranged from 8 years to 80 years old and a great time was had by all.
The Project involved Penygraig & Williamstown Communities First, Valleys Kids Art Works, Penygraig Community Project, the Older Persons Coffee morning group, Penygraig Community Project volunteers and 5 local schools.
Workshops with schools and groups were held leading up to the show where they learnt about the effects of a throw away society on our planet and designed and made the outfits.
Each school had an element and learned of the effects of global warming on the environment and made their costumes to match the element. They were:
Tai Centre - Fire
Penygraig Juniors - Water
Williamstown Primary - Earth
Ysgol yr Eos - Air
While Tonypandy Community College, Older Persons Group and the Volunteer Group came up with their designs from a variety of materials.
So the serious side of the project was the environmental issues and the fun side was designing and making the costumes and modelling them on the night.
The night of the show was a sell out and the Soar Centre was full to capacity. Everyone, from audience to participants enjoyed the show and there was a standing ovation at the end.
A big thank you to all those who took part and support the Trashion Show.

Penygraig Bike Ride
Friday 09 October 2009
On Monday 25th May, 12 youth club members set off on the annual Penygraig Community Project Bike Ride
Read more about Penygraig Bike Ride
After raising around £90 sponsorship money each to fund the ride taking them from Trefin to Llanelli doing a total of 90 miles over 3 days.
The sun shone down on the first day, resulting in picturesque countryside, encounters with wildlife and celeb spotting in St David’s. Tired legs were soothed with a dip in the ocean. The Girls especially took advantage of being by the sea, swimming in the freezing cold water every chance they got!
A soggy start to day two, setting off from Broad Haven, finishing in St Florence. The wet and windy weather only motivated the young riders to complete the 26 miles in 4 hours – a record speed!
The young people were not short of things to do in the evenings - taking walks on the beach, exploring caves, chatting and playing games. The boys even learned a little about the Welsh culture when they took a walk to Little Haven, where they enjoyed a demonstration on the use of an ancient mode of transport and fishing boat called the Coracle.
Day 3 started with sore bums and aching legs and while the riders were happy it was the last ride so they could rest, they were disappointed the adventure was fast coming to an end. With spirits high, the long uphill climb at the start was easily conquered and riders were left to enjoy the beautiful millennium coastline, coming to an end in Llanelli.
Some thoughts from our riders:
Chloe said “it weren’t too easy, but weren’t too hard – it was nice”.
Jerone said “I really enjoyed it and liked riding the bikes everywhere”.

Age 14-18 yrs
Kickjam tournament is a football tournament that happens once a year, which involves 6-a-side teams, aged between 14-18 yrs.
We entered 2 teams this year 1 team involved 3 members of staff to make the numbers up.
Both teams went out in the group stages, the older members of the team was a bit disappointed because they did not progress to the knock out stages as they won the tournament last year.
It was a good day overall especially for one young lad who never participated in a group event like this which gave him confidence and a opportunity to be part of a team for the first time.
