About Operation Zulu

Operation Zulu is a major arts project spearheaded by Valleys Kids, that will link the people and communities of the South Wales Valleys and the township of Langa in Cape Town, South Africa, culminating in a large scale theatre performance as part of Wales’ Cultural Olympiad happening alongside the London Olympics in 2012.

Operation Zulu is inspired by the events of 1964 in South Africa when the iconic film Zulu was being made in Natal while at the same time, Nelson Mandela was being given a life sentence for treason and being transported to Robben Island. We plan to create an epic piece of musical theatre that revolves around the story of a young Welsh boy and a Zulu girl who meet on the film set of Zulu and fall in love but are torn apart by the unforgiving laws of the apartheid system. The story will follow their lives in the succeeding forty odd years until the final unravelling of their story at the London Olympics.

For this ambitious and exciting project we will need a large scale cast covering a whole range of performance skills to work alongside a team of professionals. We will be looking for the following talents and many more to enable us to tell the story in as rich and multi layered way as possible.

Operation Zulu is part of The Power of the Flame, a Welsh national programme which aims to inspire young people to achieve their best in their chosen field. The project is funded by Legacy Trust UK, an independent charity set up to create a cultural and sporting legacy from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
