The ten young people aged 8 to 13 participated in a week’s residency from Saturday 29th May through to the performance on Friday 4th June. This was the second performance of the day for the ArtWorks team as Rhydyfelin Drama Workshop had performed ‘Escape from Wonderland’ at the Ilan Centre in Rhydyfelin in the afternoon.

A big thank you to the many volunteers who helped out in the show, from set painting to preparing the teas and coffees – we couldn’t have done it without you! There was a good turn out of audience numbers who came to support the show, including young people from Rhydyfelin and Dinas Valleys Kids projects.

Penygraig Drama Workshop devised the piece and also helped to create a movement piece and song that were in the show. In the show, a group of young people from Penygraig are whisked away to Egypt by a young Pharaoh who wants to make them his slaves. They discover through play that although the body may be owned it takes a lot to enslave the mind. They worked so hard and performed well. We are very proud of what Penygraig Drama Workshop has achieved!

Everything is blending in the autumn foggy night. Crunching footsteps while walking home. Standing still, the quiet shadows creep into the coldness.

I find my solace.

Scared by the silhouettes of the lurking tall trees. Scared by the gun-shot barking whilst searching for home in this autumn foggy night.

In a mysterious lane, a shadow leads to a house. Gothic fire, quietly, menacingly purging in the autumn foggy night.

Flight Wings Creative Workshop June 2010

We are bringing new things to ArtWorks all the time. Our young people have used drama, dance, music, visual arts, multimedia work and are now exploring creative writing as well.

Creating through writing has been explored in Penygraig and Rhydfelin ArtWorks drama sessions. The Flight Wings group wrote excellent pieces in their weekend workshop on the 19th and 20th June, which they transformed into haunting drama scenes.

If you fancy yourself as the next Philip Pullman or just enjoy creating worlds with words, watch out for upcoming creative writing events!

The Secret Tree

A recent two-day residency at the Penyrenglyn Project saw the Drama Workshop group transported to a secret den hideout where Levi and his friends begin to solve the mystery. They travel from place to place to find the clues and collect coloured crayons along the way, but still they have not come to the end of their quest….

The Penyrenglyn Drama Workshop has been working very hard to continue developing their story of The Secret Tree. They created a huge den made out of old bits and bobs that where lying around, and this formed a solid base for devising and performing the story. They also made a fantastic soundscape, using a collection of unusual instruments that accompanied the scenes to create an exciting yet eerie atmosphere. We worked both in role and with music to develop the story and will continue to devise the story during regular weekly sessions.

The Secret Tree is due to be performed in the summer; we look forward to seeing you there!

Read more about Trashion Show

Artworks begun their work with the young people in the Tai Education Centreby being involved in a Communities First led project, The Trashion Show.‘From Junk to Funk’, over several sessions the young people designed andcreated costumes from material that would have otherwise been thrown away. The theme was ‘fire’ and we learned about the environmental damage that firecan cause, whilst creating fantastic fiery costumes. On the last session thechildren strutted their stuff on the catwalk with lights, smoke machine andwind machine. A great time was had by all and even the staff couldn’t keepaway from the catwalk! The teachers were so pleased with how well they allperformed and could not believe how great the costumes were and how muchconfidence the young people had. A short film was made during our timethere, and this was premiered at the Communities First Trashion Show. We arebeginning drama sessions at Tai this term, so what a fantastic start toworking with the young people of the Tai Centre!
