World of the butterfly show

World Of The Butterflies, created by the Rhydyfelin Drama Workshop, written by Tegan Waites, explored the theme of opposites as a starting point for the devising process. The group attended a residency with writer Laurence Allen as part of Valleys Kids Operation Zulu. During the residency the young people became investigative journalists, working in role and exploring the decline of the butterfly population. The group created news reports and were inspired to continue and create this magical and beautiful piece of work.

This production was further developed through a series of workshops using role, depictions and imagery as devising tools. The group’s commitment and enthusiasm to exploring the themes encouraged the continued development of the story.

The story tells of a young girl named Emmalee and a South African girl named Nehanda, they are brought together within the confines of a local children’s home and their journey begins through the exploration of a new world, the world of the butterflies.

In August we held a week long rehearsal residency culminating in a spectacular performance by the young people. The outstanding standard of performance and the dedication of the young people involved in the project shone through as the full house sat down to enjoy the show. The packed audience were transported to this new world using theatre, dance and lots of butterfly magic. The audience left the Ilan Centre feeling overwhelmed and inspired by this fantastic thought provoking and imaginative original story, beautifully created and performed by Rhydyfelin Drama Workshop.
