Acting in one way ticket

This beautiful story tells of the trials of growing up and the possibilities of moving away. ArtWorks is extremely proud to say this is the first piece written by Ian McAndrew who took the post of Apprentice Youth Arts Worker with us at Valleys Kids in December.

One Way Tickets journey began as part of a residency with writer Laurence Allen. This is an ongoing project in collaboration with Operation Zulu. In a weeks residency we chose ‘Leaving Home’ as our own starting point - a central theme in Laurence Allen’s emerging large scale Community Play. Penygraig Drama Workshop spent the term working on the material culminating in a two-day residency. This subject area engrossed the young people and sparked many questions, opinions and small debates. We used our shared knowledge as a tool to express our thoughts and to create our own original play. In July we held a weeks performance residency involving over 20 young people and two graduate volunteers. The young people performed to a packed house of over a hundred audience members who were hugely impressed by the outstanding performances given by a committed and inspirational cast.
